The soccer season is well under way in CBS Charleville this year with three different teams competing in Munster Cup Competitions.
The Senior Cup team has played 2 of its 3 group games. The first of these was away to Presentation College Cork and despite a valiant comeback the lads lost by 3 goals to 2. Goals from Pat O'Callaghan and Conor Laffan were just not enough to get anything from the game. The second group game was home to Cobh Community College and even though CBS were 2 nil down with only a minute left, they somehow salvaged a draw. Goals from Jeremy Bridgeman and Pat O'Callaghan secured a vital point and if other results go our way a win in our final match could put us through to the knockout stages.
The Junior Trophy Team (U-17) has also played their 1st Round match which was away to Dunmanway. The game was played in horrendous conditions and ended up 3-3 after extra time. Goals from Pat O'Callaghan, Conor Laffan, and Darren Casey ensured the game went to extra time. Despite creating several chances Charleville couild not find a winner and the game went to a penalty shootout. All five of our penalty takers scored and Brian O'Connell managed to save one thus ensuring a nervy progress to Round 2. This was a game Charleville should have won comfortably and hopefully was a valueable lesson learned.
The CBS Minor Trophy team (U-15) have played two matches to date in this knockout competition. In round 1 CBS met Coláiste Mhuire, Crosshaven on a squally day in early October. A first half goal from Seán Cahill, together with second half scores by Aaron Fitzgerald and to captain Ed Sheehy, gave CBS a 1-3 victory in a tough opening match. Round 2 brought CBS Charleville to Cork City to play Ashton Comprehensive. It was a nail-biting encounter between two evenly-matched teams, which ended at 4-4 after full-time, Charleville goals coming from Seán Cahill (2), Kevin Laffan and Darragh Foley. Two periods of extra time saw no further score, and so the game proceeded to a penalty shoot-out. At 4 penalties each, Ashton's fifth hit the bar, leaving Jack Callaghan to convert for CBS victory. Without a moments hesitation, he brought CBS to Round 3.
